When I first read Hjalmar Pettersson Janek’s memoir — written in 1901 after his time fighting alongside the Boers in South Africa — I was struck not only by the adventure, but by the tone. There’s daring, yes. But also reflection. Humor. A sense of honor now almost extinct.
Janek was a Swedish volunteer in the Scandinavian Free Corps. He faced British elite troops at Magersfontein, was captured, escaped — several times. But this is more than a tale of war. It’s about what men choose to fight for when no one expects them to.
